SYSON
SYSON was established in 2013 by independent curator Jennie Syson as a new commercial contemporary art gallery in Nottingham. The gallery works with a range of artists in the city and beyond on a number of ambitious exhibitions, editions, art fairs and commissions. In the gallery's first year, Jennie Syson was nominated for the Paul Hamlyn Breakthrough Award.
The gallery has moved its permanent venue to 19 Weekday Cross in Nottingham's historic Lacemarket and at the heart developing Creative Quarter. With support from Arts Council England and Nottingham City Council, SYSON now houses a new gallery space, shop and studios - a stone's throw from Nottingham Contemporary.
The gallery programme includes talks and events, artists' book and zine fairs, and regular Reading Room sessions where texts pertaining to contemporary art and critical theory are discussed in an informal and relaxed setting. Each year, we award the SYSON prize at Nottingham Castle Museum and Art gallery's annual open exhibition, which results in an exhibition and artists' development for recipients.
